Grasmere is only a few miles away and a short trip by car or bus. Made famous by Wordsworth, who lived here for 14 years, it’s easy to see why he was mesmerised by its beauty and said of it “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found.”
Grasmere is a hotspot when it’s sports day. Grasmere Sports, first held in 1852, is a big event in the village’s calendar, drawing visitors from far and wide. The annual Grasmere ‘Rushbearing’ ceremony goes back even further in terms of traditions, and of particular note is the annual village procession with all sorts going on – you’ll see (& hear) choirs and brass bands, but look out for the six ‘maids of honour’ decorated with rushes and flowers.
Grasmere is also a hotbed of activity if you’re into the fell running scene – head for Helm Crag or Fairfield. Grasmere is a cute village, small but perfectly formed and is great for a day visit or can be a lovely circular walk from Ambleside.
